The free overview

Lofoten is expensive, the weather changes by the hour and the buses run to a timetable that seems to have been written for somebody else. It is also the most beautiful place I have ever missed a connection.

This guide follows the E10 from Svolvær down to Å at the end of the road over eight days, with a hired bike for the flat middle section and local buses for the rest. It is written for people who want to see the islands properly without renting a car or paying for a tour.

Weather, honestly

Every hike in the guide comes with a bad-weather plan: a lower route, a museum, a sauna or a bakery with a view. On the day the rain came in sideways across Flakstad, the bakery was the right call.

Money

Norway is the most expensive country in this series. The budget page shows where the money goes and where it does not have to: shared rorbu cabins, supermarket lunches, the one fish shop that sells cooked cod by weight, and the free ferry that saves a two-hour bus.

When to go

Late February to March for the light and the northern lights, June to August for the midnight sun and open trails, early September for both, with a little luck.

“The bad-weather page saved our trip. Three days of rain and we still came home saying it was the best week we have had in years.”
